1WORLD Sports Helps CPS Kids Finish PALA

CHICAGO, IL-- On Monday, November 14, 2011, 1WORLD Sports threw two celebrations to honor the 2,200 Chicago Public School students from 18 schools who completed the PALA Challenge.  The celebrations were hosted with help from our partners at Healthy Schools Campaign and Chicago Public Schools, at Robert Black Elementary School and Walsh Elementary School, where kids did exceptionally well staying active to earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA).

Northwestern's Fitzgerald Earns Coaching Honor

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head football coach Pat Fitzgerald has been named the inaugural 1WORLD Sports Coach of the Year, the organization announced at its first-annual Fitness Festival and banquet on Sunday, May 1.

Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald has been named the inaugural 1WORLD Sports Coach of the Year, the organization announced Sunday at its first annual Fitness Festival and banquet.

Founded by Ted Devine, 1WORLD Sports' mission is to educate, motivate and inspire underprivileged youth through sports to become both better athletes and people.

Fitzgerald earned the honor based on the criteria of academics, community and teamwork.

Kids from CHA get ice time with Blackhawks' Keith

Damikio Gilbert figured he had the skating part of hockey down by his third lap around the rink Thursday at Johnny's Ice House West on the West Side.
"I fell a couple times but I think I have the skating down," Gilbert said. "It was good."
Gilbert, 13, was one of 60 boys and girls from the Chicago Housing Authority who took part in the on-ice clinic organized by 1World Sports and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Equipment Drive Held for Blackhawks Event to Inspire

1WORLD Sports held an equipment drive at the North Shore Ice Arena on November 13th to gather donated skates, sticks, shin pads, and gloves for our Event to Inspire with the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec 2nd. The response was great, and we are close to achieving our donation goals. A big thanks to everyone who donated equipment that will help 60 Chicago Housing Authority kids have an opportunity to practice with the Blackhawks and learn the 1WORLD Sports’ Responsibilities of an Athlete!

Winning Back Recess in Little Village

On October 23rd, 1WORLD Sports and the Healthy Schools Campaign teamed up to host a training seminar in Little Village for the parents of Chicago Public School children who do not have access to recess. Roughly 63% of CPS students don’t have access to recess, most often due to lack of recess monitors.

1WORLD Sports Teaches Responsible Athletes with the Chicago Fire

On October 10th, 1WORLD Sports partnered with the Chicago Fire and the Illinois Youth Soccer Association to host an Event to Inspire at Toyota Park. During this event, over 140 youth players from the IYSA’s inner-city program were given the opportunity to meet the players and staff of the Chicago Fire while practicing their skills in a training session with the Fire coaches. After, the kids were broken down into working groups where certified 1WS coaches taught the Responsibilities of an Athlete workbook, a curriculum designed to promote teamwork, goal-setting, and sportsmanship.
